About This Role
Gunnison Valley Health is hiring a per-diem EMT to staff ambulances across a large, rugged service area in Colorado. You'll respond to roughly 1,600 calls annually covering nearly 4,400 square miles of mixed urban and rural terrain, which means being ready for extended response times and remote scenes in challenging conditions. The operation runs three 24/7 ambulances on a 48/96 schedule. This role suits candidates who are comfortable working independently in austere environments, can handle the physical and mental demands of paramedicine in a rural setting, and prefer flexible scheduling without a fixed commitment. You'll need current EMT certification and the ability to operate effectively when isolated from immediate backup resources.

Frequently asked questions
How does per diem nursing work?
Per diem nurses pick up shifts as needed without a fixed weekly schedule. You commit to a minimum number of shifts per month and choose dates that fit your availability.
Does per diem pay more than staff?
Yes — per diem hourly rates are typically 20–40% higher than staff rates because there are no benefits or guaranteed hours.
Are benefits included?
Most per diem roles do not include health benefits or PTO; the higher hourly rate is meant to offset that. Some hospitals offer limited benefits at higher commitment tiers.
